How this list is built
Every entry's position is computed from public facts of professional recognition— awards and inclusion in critics' lists — never from platform star ratings, and never from our health scores. Each recognition earns points:

Points decay with age — full credit this year, 60% at one year, 36% at two; recognitions older than three years score zero. Ties break by breadth (number of distinct sources), then recency, then alphabetically.
Health data does not affect rank, with one disclosed exception: establishments whose permit was suspended by the county within the past 6 months are excluded until the window clears. Each entry links to its full inspection record.
Recognition facts are recorded with source and link; we do not reproduce any publication's ordering or editorial content. Known limitations: editorial coverage skews toward Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Tempe; recognition lags new openings; restaurants on tribal land (e.g. at Wild Horse Pass or Talking Stick) hold no county permit and are outside our health-record coverage, so they cannot appear; and rank measures breadth of current professional recognition, not a claim that #12 is better than #15. The list refreshes with each James Beard cycle, when the Michelin Southwest Guide publishes, and quarterly otherwise.
